What our team is learning at Fairy Tale Books today

Today is a little unusual at Fairy Tale Books.

From 11:30 AM to 2 PM, our young team members from Pleasanton, Jourdanton, Charlotte, and Devine are all together in the store for a dedicated training session.

For customers, that may simply look like a busy bookstore full of familiar faces. Behind the scenes, though, the goal is much bigger.

We are teaching what it means to help create a bookstore people want to return to.

At Fairy Tale Books, our motto is Words Are Magic, and that idea reaches far beyond the books on the shelves. It includes the way customers are greeted, the way the store looks and feels, the way questions are answered, and the way every person who walks through the door is treated.

Learning to See the Store Through a Customer’s Eyes

One of the most important skills our team will work on today is observation.

That means noticing when a display needs straightening, when a customer may need help but has not asked yet, when a shelf looks picked over, or when something about the store does not feel welcoming.

It also means noticing opportunities.

A bookstore is more than a place where transactions happen. It can be a gathering place, a discovery place, and a place where people from different parts of our county find something in common.

Our team will be learning to recognize those moments and help create more of them.

Opening the Store the Right Way

A good customer experience begins before the first customer arrives.

Our team will learn the opening routine, including preparing the register, counting the opening money, turning on lights and music, checking the store for anything that needs attention, correcting displays and appearance, and preparing for any events scheduled that day.

Even our unofficial “bug patrol” is part of the process.

The goal is simple: when the first customer walks through the door, the store should already feel ready for them.

Closing With the Same Care

Closing the store is not simply locking the door.

The team will learn how to properly close the register, turn off and recharge equipment, straighten the store, review notes from the day, and make sure doors and other areas are secure before leaving.

Those routines help ensure that tomorrow begins just as smoothly as today ended.

Customer Service Without the Sales Pressure

One of the things we want our staff to understand is that good bookselling is not about pushing a product.

It is about listening.

Customers may come in knowing exactly what they want, or they may simply know that they want “something good.”

Our staff will practice asking better questions, listening for clues, and helping customers discover books they may not have found on their own.

Sometimes the best customer service is a recommendation.

Sometimes it is helping someone find a gift.

And sometimes it is simply giving someone room to browse.

Knowing the difference matters.

Representing the Store

Our team will also talk about what it means to represent Fairy Tale Books while they are working.

That includes personal appearance, professionalism, the way we speak about the store.

Social media  should help build awareness of what is happening at the bookstore, invite people to visit, and reflect positively on the store and the community around it.

That matters because every employee becomes part of the store’s reputation.

Customers remember how a place made them feel.

Learning the Business Behind the Books

Training will also include some of the practical parts of running a bookstore.

Our team will spend time with the register, store procedures, merchandise, events, customer questions, and the everyday decisions that keep a small independent bookstore operating.

For young employees, that means gaining experience that reaches well beyond retail.

They are learning communication, responsibility, problem solving, teamwork, attention to detail, and how a small business serves its community.

Those are skills that will follow them wherever they go next.

Building Community One Visit at a Time

Perhaps the most important lesson today is that Fairy Tale Books is not simply here to sell books.

We want the store to be part of the community.

That means supporting readers, writers, teachers, families, local creators, clubs, conversations, and the many small connections that happen when people share a place built around stories and ideas.

Our employees have a role in creating that.

Every greeting matters.

Every recommendation matters.

Every straightened shelf, answered question, event invitation, and positive interaction adds something to the experience.

That is what they are learning today.

And if you happen to stop by between 11:30 AM and 2 PM, you may get to meet the whole team while they are at it.

At Fairy Tale Books, we believe Words Are Magic.

Today, our team is learning how to help make that magic
