The Greatest Gift

THE GREATEST GIFT

In our store, discussions about fostering a love of reading in children are a weekly occurrence. Reading is the cornerstone skill;  when mastered, all other skills become readily accessible. Books serve as teachers when a personal guide is out of reach. They are the epic films of our imagination, providing solace in tough times and companionship in solitude. Through books, we discover ourselves and gain empathy for others through the stories they tell.

But you know that...

You are already a customer of our bookstore.  You probably have a library yourself of some dimension, large or small.  Your children, if you have them, probably already have a love of reading.  We may have already had a conversation about this in the store when you last visited.  And now, after much thought, my real concern has shifted to adults—not just those who can’t read, but perhaps even more troubling, those who can but choose not to.

Growing up in an environment where parents are avid readers significantly influences a child's attitude toward reading and literacy. When children observe their parents immersed in books, they naturally develop a curiosity and appreciation for reading. Witnessing this behavior in their parents creates a positive association with literature, making it a valued activity rather than a chore. Parents who read aloud to their children not only enhance their vocabulary and comprehension skills but also foster a love for storytelling and imagination. A shared experience of reading together strengthens the parent-child bond, making reading a joyful and engaging activity. Ultimately, children who are surrounded by reading adults are more likely to become enthusiastic readers themselves, setting the foundation for lifelong learning and exploration.

When a child can read, you have given them a road to anywhere they want to go in life.  The same is still true for adults.

If we want more adults to read, we need to make reading visible, social, and part of everyday life. Talk about books the way you talk about movies, share what you're reading with friends, and invite others to join a book club or reading challenge. Give books as gifts, swap recommendations, or simply let others see you enjoying a good story. Reading isn’t just a solitary act—it’s a shared experience that connects us, sparks conversations, and sets an example for the next generation. When we make reading a normal, enjoyable part of adult life, we inspire others to do the same.

Want to raise a reader? Be a reader. Let your kids see you lost in a book, talking about stories, and making reading a part of everyday life. The best way to foster a love of books in the next generation is to show them that reading isn’t just for school—it’s for life. Pick up a book today, not just for yourself, but for them
